We'll spend 8 hours exploring the rich estuaries and grass flats, targeting everything from hard-fighting redfish to hefty black drum. Whether you're a seasoned pro or it's your first time wetting a line, our experienced captains know how to put you on the fish and ensure you have a blast doing it.

What to Expect on the Water

We'll kick off bright and early, departing from Weeki Wachee to make the most of prime fishing hours. The beauty of Homosassa's inshore waters is the variety – one minute you might be sight-casting to tailing redfish in skinny water, the next you could be battling a bruiser black drum near an oyster bar. Our trips are hands-on, so be ready to cast, fight fish, and maybe even learn a new technique or two. Don't worry about gear; we've got top-notch rods, reels, and bait all set for you. Just bring some snacks, drinks, and a good attitude, and we'll handle the rest.

Fishing Tactics & Hot Spots

Homosassa's diverse ecosystem means we'll mix up our tactics throughout the day. We might start by tossing soft plastics around mangrove shorelines for snook, then switch to live bait fishing deeper channels for black drum. If the tide's right, we'll pole along grass flats, looking for the telltale signs of redfish pushing water. For those interested in the bigger game, we can even try our luck with tarpon or cobia when they're in season. Our captains know these waters like the back of their hand, so we'll adjust our approach based on conditions to maximize your chances of a stellar catch.

Top Catches This Season

Spanish Mackerel: These speedy swimmers are a blast on light tackle. They're often found in schools, so when you find them, the action can be non-stop. Look for them to show up in spring and fall, chasing bait schools near the surface. Their quick runs and acrobatic jumps make them a favorite for both novice and experienced anglers.

Snook: The wily snook is a prized catch in Homosassa waters. These ambush predators love to hang around structure, so we'll target them near mangrove roots, docks, and oyster bars. They're known for their powerful initial runs and their ability to cut you off on nearby obstacles. The challenge of outwitting a big snook is what keeps many anglers coming back for more.

Black Drum: Don't let their ugly mugs fool you – black drum are formidable opponents on the end of a line. These bottom-feeders can grow to impressive sizes, with some real bruisers lurking in deeper holes and channels. They're suckers for crabs and shrimp, and when hooked, they use their broad bodies to put up a stubborn fight. The bigger ones make for great photos, but the smaller "puppy drum" are excellent table fare.

Tarpon: Known as the "Silver King," hooking into a tarpon is an experience you won't soon forget. These prehistoric-looking fish are famous for their spectacular leaps and dogged fights. We typically see them roll through Homosassa waters from late spring through summer. Landing a tarpon is a true test of an angler's skill and endurance – it's not uncommon for battles to last over an hour!

Redfish: The redfish, or red drum, is perhaps the quintessential inshore gamefish of Florida. We find them year-round in Homosassa, but fall is prime time when big schools of bull reds come inshore to spawn. Sight-fishing for tailing reds in shallow water is an adrenaline-pumping experience. These copper-colored beauties are known for their powerful runs and their distinctive spot near the tail. Whether you're casting artificials or soaking live bait, hooking into a red is always a thrill.

Black Drum

Black Drum are the bulldogs of the flats, growing up to 90 pounds but more commonly 5-30 pounds. You'll find them in brackish waters, often around oyster beds and muddy bottoms. They use their strong chin barbels to root out crustaceans and mollusks. Spring is prime time when they school up to spawn. Anglers love Black Drum for their powerful, dogged fights and good eating quality (especially the smaller ones). They're not picky eaters – fresh cut crab or shrimp on the bottom usually does the trick. Here's a tip: listen for their distinctive croaking sound. On quiet days, you can actually hear them feeding. When you do, cast nearby and be ready for a thump. Just remember, the bigger ones over 15 pounds tend to be tough and less tasty, so consider releasing those for someone else to enjoy.

Black Drum

Redfish

Redfish, or red drum, are the bread and butter of our inshore fishing. They typically range from 20-30 inches but can grow much larger. Look for them tailing in shallow water, often in just 1-4 feet deep. They love hanging around oyster bars, grass flats, and mangrove shorelines. Fall is prime time when big schools invade the flats. Anglers prize redfish for their strong runs and their excellent table fare. They're not picky eaters – live shrimp, cut bait, or artificial lures all work well. Here's a tip: on sunny days, look for their copper-colored backs reflecting in shallow water. Once you spot them, a well-placed cast with a weedless spoon or soft plastic often does the trick. Just remember to look for that distinctive black spot near the tail – sometimes they have more than one!

Redfish

Snook

Snook are the crafty ambush predators of our inshore waters. They typically range from 24-34 inches but can grow over 4 feet. You'll find them lurking around mangroves, docks, and bridge pilings, especially in estuaries and river mouths. Spring and fall are prime seasons when water temperatures are just right. Snook are prized for their powerful runs and acrobatic leaps – hooking one is just the start of the battle. They're also excellent table fare, though heavily regulated. Live bait like pilchards or pinfish works great, but there's nothing quite like the thrill of a snook smashing a topwater lure at dawn. Here's a local tip: focus on points and cuts in the mangroves during moving tides. That's when snook set up to ambush bait being swept past their hideouts.

Snook

Spanish Mackerel

Spanish Mackerel are fast-swimming predators that'll give you a run for your money. Typically 1-2 feet long and 2-6 pounds, these streamlined fish are known for their speed and acrobatics. You'll find them in coastal waters, often in large schools near the surface. Spring and fall are prime seasons as they migrate. Look for them around structures like reefs or pier pilings. Anglers love Spanish Mackerel for their aggressive strikes and tasty meat. They'll hit a variety of lures, but I've had great luck with small, shiny spoons retrieved quickly. Pro tip: when you spot a school, cast beyond them and retrieve through the group – these guys are easily spooked by overhead lures. Fresh-caught Spanish Mackerel makes for some excellent eating, especially grilled or smoked.

Spanish Mackerel

Tarpon

Tarpon are the silver kings of our waters, growing up to 8 feet and 280 pounds. These prehistoric-looking fish are found in coastal waters, often rolling at the surface. Spring and summer are prime seasons as they migrate through. Anglers chase tarpon for their spectacular aerial displays and sheer power – landing one is a true feat. While not prized for eating, the thrill of the catch is unmatched. You'll find them around bridges, passes, and along beaches. Live bait like mullet or crabs works well, but nothing beats sight-casting with a fly. Here's a local secret: on calm mornings, look for their dorsal fins cutting the surface as they "daisy chain" in a circle. Approach quietly and make a precise cast – you might just hook into the fish of a lifetime. Just remember, these giants tire easily, so use heavy tackle and release them quickly.
