What to Expect on the Water

Our full-day charter kicks off bright and early, giving us plenty of time to chase down the hottest bites. We'll cruise through the crystal-clear waters of Homosassa, known for its incredible inshore fishing. You'll get to try your hand at different techniques as we target various species throughout the day. We've got all the gear you need, from light tackle for trout to heavier setups for those big bull reds. Just bring your sense of adventure, and we'll take care of the rest. Fishing Techniques & Hotspots

On this trip, we'll use a mix of live bait and artificial lures to entice the fish. We might start the day sight-casting to tailing redfish in the shallows, then switch to working the mangrove edges for snook as the tide changes. When the sun gets high, we'll move to deeper water and drop lines for grouper or cobia. If the mackerel are running, we'll break out the spoons and do some trolling. And for those looking for a real thrill, we can even try our luck with some shark fishing in the afternoon. Throughout the day, I'll share tips on reading the water, spotting fish, and perfecting your casting technique. It's all about adapting to what the fish are doing and making the most of every minute on the water.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Spanish Mackerel: These speedsters are a blast to catch and put up a great fight on light tackle. We usually find them in schools, so when we hit a pod, it's non-stop action. They're most active in the cooler months, but we can find them year-round. Expect fast runs and aerial acrobatics when you hook one – it's like fishing on fast-forward!

Snook: The elusive snook is a prized catch for many anglers. These ambush predators love to hang around structure, so we'll be working docks, mangroves, and oyster bars. They're known for their powerful initial run and their ability to wrap you around obstacles, so be ready for a challenge. The bite is best during warmer months, and there's nothing quite like the sound of a snook crushing a topwater lure at dawn.

Black Drum: These bruisers can grow to monster sizes, but we usually target the "puppy drums" in the 5-30 pound range. They're bottom feeders, so we'll use natural baits like shrimp or crab to entice them. Black drum are less glamorous than some other species, but they put up a stubborn fight and are excellent table fare. Plus, you can catch them year-round in Homosassa.

Tarpon: Known as the "Silver King," tarpon are the ultimate gamefish for many anglers. These prehistoric monsters can exceed 150 pounds and are famous for their spectacular leaps and head-shaking fights. We typically target them from late spring through summer when they migrate through our waters. Landing a tarpon is a true test of skill and endurance – it's an experience you'll never forget.

Redfish: Also known as red drum, these copper-colored beauties are a staple of inshore fishing in Homosassa. We can sight fish for them in the shallows or target bigger bulls in deeper water. Redfish are known for their powerful, bulldogging runs and their distinctive tail-on-the-surface feeding behavior. They're great fighters and even better eating if you decide to keep one for dinner.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

Fishing in Homosassa isn't just about catching fish – it's about the whole experience. The stunning natural beauty of the area, with its crystal-clear springs and abundant wildlife, makes every trip special. You might spot manatees, dolphins, or even a bald eagle while we're out on the water. And let's not forget the fishing itself – the diversity of species and fishing styles means every trip is different. One minute you're finessing a trout, the next you're battling a bull red. It's this variety that keeps anglers coming back year after year. Plus, with our local knowledge and flexible approach, we can usually find biting fish even when conditions are tough. Whether you're looking to fill the cooler or just enjoy a day on the water, Homosassa has something for everyone.

Learn more about the species

Black Drum

Black drum are the bulldozers of the flats. These cousins of redfish can grow over 50 pounds, though most we catch are in the 5-20 pound range. You'll find them rooting around oyster bars and channel edges, especially in spring and fall. They're not the prettiest fish, but they pull like freight trains and smaller ones are great eating. Fresh peeled shrimp or blue crab are top baits. Listen for their distinctive croaking sound – that can clue you in to a school. My go-to rig is a fish-finder setup with a circle hook. When you feel that telltale thump, resist the urge to set the hook hard. Just reel steadily and let the circle hook do its job. It's a great species for both beginners and seasoned anglers looking for a solid fight.

Snook

Tarpon are the silver kings of our local waters. Adults typically run 80-150 pounds and can reach over 200. These prehistoric beasts migrate through our area from late spring through summer, hanging around bridges, passes, and deeper flats. Hooking one is thrilling, but landing it is a real challenge – they're known for spectacular aerial displays and long, powerful runs. Most anglers practice catch and release. Live mullet, pinfish, or crabs are top baits. If you're fly fishing, black and purple streamers work well. My best tip: when a tarpon jumps, drop your rod tip to give it slack. Otherwise that powerful head shake can throw the hook. It's an unforgettable battle that'll test your stamina and leave your arms burning.

Snook

Spanish Mackerel

Redfish are one of our most popular targets here in Homosassa. These copper-colored beauties typically range from 5-15 pounds, though we occasionally hook into 30+ pound bulls. You'll find them cruising the shallow flats and oyster bars, often with their backs sticking out of the water. Spring and fall are prime seasons, but we catch them year-round. Reds put up a great fight and make excellent table fare. To land one, try sight-casting with a gold spoon or live shrimp on a popping cork. My favorite trick is to chum with cut mullet to get them fired up. Nothing beats watching a tailing redfish crush your bait in skinny water. Just be ready for that initial run – these guys can strip line in a hurry!

Spanish Mackerel

Tarpon

Snook are one of our wiliest gamefish. These hard-fighting linesiders love to hide around mangroves, docks, and other structure. Adults typically run 5-15 pounds, but 30+ pounders aren't unheard of. Spring and fall are prime seasons as they move between backcountry and coastal waters. Snook are prized for both their fighting ability and delicate flavor. Live pilchards or pinfish are top baits, but they'll also crush topwater plugs at dawn and dusk. My favorite tactic is to quietly stake out near a mangrove point on an outgoing tide. Cast your bait upcurrent and let it drift naturally into the strike zone. When a snook hits, be ready to steer it away from the roots or you'll get cut off quick!
